How to pack and travel with luxury swimwear
By the Elk Pegasus studio,
A bespoke swimsuit represents a significant investment of time and money. Packing it carelessly for a trip can undo months of careful construction in a single flight. This article covers how to pack swimwear so it arrives in the same condition it left the studio.
Folding versus rolling
Swimwear is best folded flat rather than rolled. Rolling compresses the fabric and can leave a crease along the roll line that takes time to relax out. Fold the piece along its natural seam lines and place it flat in the case, ideally between layers of softer clothing that will not press hard against it.
For a bikini set, fold the top and bottom separately and place them together. Hardware, clasps, and rings should face inward so they do not catch on other items in the case.
What to avoid in transit
Avoid placing heavy items on top of swimwear in a packed case. The pressure can distort the shape of structured pieces, particularly bandeaus with boning. If the case will be checked, place the swimwear near the top of the bag where it is less likely to be compressed.
Sunscreen and oils are the most common cause of fabric damage during travel. Pack these in sealed bags and keep them away from the swimwear. Sunscreen stains are difficult to remove from light-coloured fabrics and can leave a permanent mark.
Caring for pieces during a trip
The same care principles that apply at home apply during travel: rinse after every wear, hand wash when possible, and dry flat in shade. Hotel bathrooms usually have a flat surface suitable for drying a swimsuit overnight.
If a piece needs to be packed damp, wrap it loosely in a dry towel rather than a plastic bag. A plastic bag traps moisture and can cause mildew in warm climates. The towel absorbs the excess water and allows the fabric to breathe.
Pieces that are cared for during travel come back from a two-week trip looking much as they did when they were packed. The habits are simple and take very little time.
