What a toile fitting is and why it matters

Clients who are new to bespoke often ask about the toile fitting. It is an unfamiliar step, and it adds time to the process. This article explains what a toile is, what happens at the fitting, and why skipping it would be a mistake.

What a toile is

A toile is a test version of the garment, made in a plain cotton fabric that has similar weight and drape to the final material but costs very little. It is not meant to look like the finished piece; it is a tool for checking the pattern before the final fabric is cut.

Making a toile adds time and material cost to the process. We include it in every commission because the alternative, cutting the final fabric and discovering a fit issue at that stage, is more expensive and more frustrating for everyone.

What happens at the fitting

The client puts on the toile and moves around in it. We watch how it sits at rest and in motion: whether the neckline gaps, whether the leg openings pull, whether the back sits flat or rides up. We ask the client to sit, to raise their arms, and to describe what feels tight or loose.

From this, we make a list of adjustments to the pattern. Some are small, a few millimetres at a seam. Others are more significant, a change to the torso length or the position of a strap. All of them are easier to make at this stage than after the final fabric has been cut.

How the remote toile fitting works

For remote commissions, the toile is posted to the client with a short guide to what to look for. We then arrange a video call during which the client tries on the toile and we observe. The process is slower than an in-person fitting and relies more on the client's description of how the garment feels, but it captures the main fit issues reliably.

The video call guide we send with the toile is revised whenever we find that clients are missing something at home that we would have spotted in the studio.

The toile fitting is the step that makes the rest of the process reliable. It is also, for many clients, the point at which the commission starts to feel real.
